The "Color Genes/GENETICS for the AKC and FCI Boxers are for Brindled and Fawn Boxers. We often call a brindle dog with less fawn backround and more Brindling a "Reverse" brindle, but there must always be noticable fawn base coat, and IT must be viewable. If a Boxer is completely black with no fawn base coat showing the genetics of this puppy or dog are questionable and even if the owner/seller has papers, there is questionable breeding in this puppy's or dog's lines, and this puppy is not a "Purebred Boxer". UP UNTIL ABOUT 15 YEARS AGO YOU COULD NEVER EVEN FIND A BLACK COLORED BOXER ANYWHERE, I never, never, ever, saw one THEN ALL OF A SUDDEN A COUPLE APPEARED, NOT IN THE SHOW RINGS, BUT IN ADVERTISEMENTS FOR "RARE BLACK BOXER PUPPIES", being advertised by backyard breeders. SHORTLY AFTER THAT SOMEONE CAME UP WITH THE DESCRIPTION "SEALED BRINDLE" AS THE SELLERS NEEDED A DESCRIPTION THAT SOMEHOW SUITED AKC STANDARD AS BLACK BOXERS CAN'T BE REGISTERED. FACT OF THE MATTER IS THAT IF AKC WERE TO SEE THESE BLACK "SEALED" BOXERS, THESE DOGS/PUPPIES WOULD NOT BE ELIGIBLE FOR REGISTRATION. Fortunately, for the breeders of these dogs, and unfortunately for the public AKC does not VIEW the puppies being registered, and the dogs are not shown in the AKC conformation ring, so little can be done about these breedings or registrations. I have seen some in person and I have noticed two things: 1. The dog was actually a "Reverse Brindle" and had some distinct brindling although was very dark and the breeder was trying to make more money off of the puppy by calling it a "Black" or "Sealed" Brindle. 2. The puppy was indeed black although the coat Often has a strange brown cast to it, but it is cLearly not the fawn base coaT covered by black brindling, but a very dark brown/black puppy wIth no distinct brindling which is a must...no exceptions. Feel free to call me to discuss, or please go to AKC or the European FCI registries website to read the Boxer dog standards. Having said that, if you want a puppy/dog that is black, or brown black then by all means make the purchase, but know ahead of time you are getting a puppy with a highly questionable and suspect pedigree, and a Boxer that is not genetically purebred! AKC STANDARD ON COLOR: Color The colors are fawn and brindle. Fawn shades vary from light tan to mahogany. The brindle ranges from sparse but clearly defined black stripes on a fawn background to such a heavy concentration of black striping that the essential fawn background color barely, although clearly, shows through (which may create the appearance of reverse brindling). White markings, if present, should be of such distribution as to enhance the dog's appearance, but may not exceed one-third of the entire coat. They are not desirable on the flanks or on the back of the torso proper. On the face, white may replace part of the otherwise essential black mask, and may extend in an upward path between the eyes, but it must not be excessive, so as to detract from true Boxer expression. The absence of white markings, the so-called "plain" fawn or brindle, is perfectly acceptable, and should not be penalized in any consideration of color. Disqualifications Boxers that are any color other than fawn or brindle. Boxers with a total of white markings exceeding one-third of the entire coat.
